It’s the call we get most. The freezer is frozen solid, the fridge side is barely cool, and the milk has gone off. The good news first: when the freezer still works, the compressor — the expensive part — is almost never the problem. Your fridge is still making cold. It just isn’t moving it to the right place.
How a fridge actually cools (in one paragraph)
Most refrigerators have one cooling system, and it lives in the freezer. Cold air is made there, on a set of coils behind the back wall, and a small fan pushes some of it down a channel into the fridge compartment. A damper controls how much gets through. So if the freezer is cold and the fridge is warm, one of three things has gone wrong: the cold air can’t get through, the fan isn’t pushing it, or the control that decides how much to send has failed.
Check these three things first (five minutes, no tools)
1. Is there thick frost on the back wall of the freezer?
Open the freezer and look at the back panel. A light dusting is normal. A thick, hard sheet of ice is not — and it’s the single most common cause of this problem. That ice is sitting on the coils and blocking the channel that feeds the fridge. It means the defrost system, which is supposed to melt the frost every few hours, has stopped doing its job.
2. Can you hear the fan inside the freezer?
Open the freezer door and press the door switch with your finger (the little plunger the door pushes when it closes). You should hear a fan start up inside. If you hear nothing, or a grinding sound, the evaporator fan is likely the problem — no fan, no air movement, no cold fridge.
3. Is anything blocking the vents?
Look for the vents between the freezer and fridge compartments, usually at the back or top of the fridge side. A bag of frozen peas pushed against the freezer-side vent, or a fridge packed so full nothing can circulate, will do this. Also check the temperature dial hasn’t been bumped to its warmest setting.
What it usually turns out to be
- The defrost system. A heater, a thermostat, or a timer/control that melts frost off the coils on a schedule. When one of these fails, ice builds until it chokes off the airflow. This is the most common cause and usually a single-visit repair.
- The evaporator fan motor. The fan that moves cold air from the freezer to the fridge. When it fails, the freezer stays cold and the fridge slowly warms. Also a single-visit repair.
- The damper. The flap that controls how much cold air reaches the fridge. If it sticks shut, the fridge warms up even though everything else is working.
- A control board. Less common, but if the board that runs the defrost cycle or the fan fails, you get the same symptoms. This is the one worth confirming before spending money on.
A trick that tells you a lot
If you see heavy frost, unplug the fridge, leave both doors open, and let it fully thaw — usually overnight. Plug it back in. If the fridge cools normally for a few days and then slowly warms up again, you’ve confirmed it’s the defrost system. The thaw fixed the symptom, not the cause. Don’t chip the ice off with anything sharp; the coils behind it are thin and easy to puncture.
Repair or replace?
For this particular problem, repair is usually the right call. Defrost parts and fan motors are among the least expensive repairs on a fridge, and the compressor — the part that decides whether an old fridge is worth keeping — is fine.
